Champions crowned at Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon 2015 in truly regal setting
Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon, the second leg of the 2015 Castle Triathlon Series, welcomed 1,500 competitors and a strong elite field headlined by international champion triathlete Lucy Gossage and former world number 1 from New Zealand, Sam Warriner to Cheshire, for what was a fantastic festival of triathlon set against the a stunning regal backdrop. Across two days of racing, plenty of new champions were crowned across a variety of distances – as well as seeing competitors of all ages get their own taste of swim, bike and run, Cheshire style.
The course at Cholmondeley Castle was typical of what we have come to expect of a Castle Triathlon Series event – a challenging swim, bike and run course but set in a beautiful part of the world with unrivalled athlete support and a great atmosphere which has made this triathlon race series the biggest in the UK.
Lucy Gossage, Colin Norris crowned King and Queen of The Gauntlet half-iron distance
Lucy Gossage may have started the race as favourite, courtesy of her recent form and champions CV, but once the race unfolded it was clear she wouldn’t have everything her own way. In the field was the former world number 1 ranked athlete, Sam Warriner (NZ) who is making something of a comeback to elite sport and would give Gossage a huge challenge on the bike. Unfortunately for Warriner, the big lead she built on the second leg would melt away to almost nothing after a mechanical. Gossage found herself in the unusual position of coming into T2 just over a minute in arrears and it was left to the run leg for her to create a lead and eventually cross the line as the 2015 champion with a larger margin of comfort than was perhaps reflective of the challenge she faced from Warriner, who would eventually finished 6 minutes behind taking 2nd place. Fran Summers rounded off the podium. Impressively, Gossage would also finish 3rd overall and with a new women’s course record.
Lucy Gossage commented afterwards:
“I really enjoyed Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon. I love the bike and run courses – it is technical, twisty and hilly and much more interesting than most. It was great to see so many novices doing shorter races out on the course at the same time and then of course the kids in the afternoon. A real family event and one I was really pleased to be part of again.”
In the men’s race, several elites were also entered including XTERRA specialist Matt Dewis, iron-distance professional Darren Jenkins and a former champion on The Gauntlet series, Matt Leeman. However, it was perhaps a less-fancied name who won the race against some of the better known names. Champion Colin Norris perhaps should have been better tipped from the start as he is the former British Middle Distance Champion for his age group in 25-29.
The future looks good for Colin Norris and he plans to build on this win and return for more on The Gauntlet Castle Triathlon Series at the flagship series finale at Hever Castle on Sunday 27th September.
Darren Jenkins finished the race in 4th in what was his second of four attempts at competing in every Gauntlet race in the series. Jenkins will now begin his preparations for The Bastion iron-distance triathlon being held at Hever Castle on the 12th July 2015 for which he starts as one of the favourites.
The podium for the Cholmondeley Castle Triathlon Gauntlet race ended:
1.9km / 96km / 21km

1. | Colin Norris (4:21:01) | Lucy Gossage (4:31:45) |

3. | Matt Dewis (4:33:55) | Fran Summers (5:26:08) |

Luke Pollard, Catherine Jameson win at the Olympic Distance
In the shorter but sharper Olympic Distance triathlon, it was Luke Pollard and Catherine Jameson who emerged victorious. The race was incredibly competitive with times to reflect that and Pollard will be pleased to have taken the scalp of Welsh Commonwealth representative and elite Liam Lloyd, who managed 2nd on the day.
The podium ended:
1.5km / 44km / 10km
Position | Men | Women |
1. | Luke Pollard (2:04:12) | Catherine Jameson (2:19:01) |
2. | Liam Lloyd (2:05:48) | Hannah Mather (2:26:38) |

A full weekend of action
As is typical of a Castle Triathlon Series race, there was something for everyone here with races for all age groups and distances up from 8 years old and a new starter sprint launched especially for those who might have never done a triathlon previously.
The event welcome more children (8 – 15 years old), than ever before with 400 taking to the start line. In keeping with the family theme volunteers from the National Charity Partner, NSPCC, helped see them round the course and welcomed them over the finishing line. Elites, Cat Jameson and Max Hazell inspired the next generation by joining in with the prize giving.
The event also welcomed a huge number of spectators who enjoyed the triathlon festival, including live bands, and revelled in the new event format which introduced an Australian style exit to the swim course and an amendment to the bike course that allowed competitors to come through the castle grounds so that the crowds could get up close to the action for this part of the race.

Joe Skipper signs with Beyond Sport Marketing
Pro triathlete and iron-distance champion, Joe Skipper, has agreed a deal with Beyond Sport Marketing to manage his commercial partnerships, sponsorships, media and PR.
Joe Skipper is one of the most talented British triathletes on the circuit currently and is tipped for big things in long course racing. After turning professional in 2011, Skipper has already won Challenge Weymouth, placed 2nd and 3rd at Ironman UK and 6th at Ironman Barcelona.
In 2015 his performances have gone from ‘promising young triathlete’ to ‘major international contender’. In May 2015, Skipper claimed the biggest result of his career at the Ironman North America World Championships in Texas and finished second with a time of 8:16:24. The time was fast and meaningful, the 6th fastest by a British triathlete ever. The bike leg was storming, the third fastest by a professional triathlete at this distance ever.
This performance at Ironman Texas all but rubber stamped Skippers place at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii where he is targeting a top-10 performance. Joe will also be targeting wins at the ITU Long Distance World Championships, Sweden (27th June) and Ironman UK (19th July) before then.
On the announcement Joe Skipper said:
“I’m really excited to be working with Beyond Sport Marketing and looking forward to taking my performances as an athlete to the next level.
I have huge ambitions in the sport and as the demands of this gruelling profession take more and more of my resources into training and getting ready to give a world class performance, it’s important that my sponsors and supporters are kept up to date and that I can present myself professionally for new commercial opportunities now my profile is at its highest ever. “
Richard Campbell, Managing Director of Beyond Sport Marketing said:
“I’m delighted to be representing Joe. He is an amazing athlete, with a strong social media presence, huge following and an outspoken and opinionated personality that makes him an event promoters dream. He is a natural marketer but backs this up with an incredible record in the sport with so much potential for more to come. Multiple champion Stephen Bayliss set to race XTERRA England
4-time iron-distance champion Stephen Bayliss is the latest big name who has announced to race at XTERRA England, set to kick off in Cranleigh, Surrey on the 30th August 2015. Bayliss, who counts wins at Ironman UK and Challenge Vichy on his illustrious CV, has been drawn to enter XTERRA England as part of his double bid at the respective world championships in Hawaii at both XTERRA and Ironman.
As a 4-time champion, 13 time podium finisher and owner of two bronze European medal in long course racing, Bayliss’ quality is undoubted, but relatively untested on the off-road circuit. His inclusion in the race offers a fascinating dynamic to what is already a strong pro mens field that race is currently stacked with pro entries including Ruben Ruzafa (ESP), Conrad Stoltz (RSA), Ben Allen (AUS), Richard Stannard (GB), Asa Shaw (FRA/GB) and many more.
Stephen Bayliss said:
“I love going off-road, they are really different and it reminds me of my childhood riding mountain bikes all the time. The race is very close to where I grew up and it is a special kind of triathlon, a different, relaxed atmosphere and a different adventure.”
Despite Stephen Bayliss illustrious career, he has never competed on the XTERRA circuit before so his inclusion adds an element of the unknown to the race dynamic, but he is not exactly a novice. This year Bayliss came second at the Lanzarote Nutri-Cross Triathlon and is a former Junior Cyclo Cross cyclist at GB level. Whilst those skills might be rusty, it obviously marks him out as a serious threat to the overall title.
The UK leg of the world off-road triathlon series will return to the Vachery Estate in Cranleigh ,Surrey on the Bank Holiday weekend 29/30th August 2015 for more muddy, off-road fun on the trails.
XTERRA England is the UK leg of the international off-road triathlon race series, offering not only by the sweet custom made trails and stunning, spring-fed clear boating lake swim, but also European Championship status. Up for grabs will be prestigious National and European titles, a $25,000 prize purse and qualifying points for the historic 20th edition of the world championships held in Maui, Hawaii.
Age-group triathletes will have the opportunity to race on the same championship course with the pros and compete for prestigious amateur National and European titles, as well as 50 precious qualifying slots to Maui, Hawaii.
XTERRA England offers the rare chance to swim, ride, run, race, eat, sleep, and dance in the serene and seductive ancient wooded countryside of Surrey. All on a private estate, no less, where huge open fields of grass welcome hundreds of campers, bands, caterers, and racers.
The championship distance is open to all triathletes and athletes of any ability and background and combines a 1.5K swim / 30K bike / 10K trail run on Sunday. There is also a half-distance sprint race option and athletes can join together to tackle either triathlon as part of a relay team. Soon to be added and new for this year will be 10km and 22km trail runs on the Saturday, kids triathlons and rumours abound about a bonfire and movie night.
The XTERRA England course starts with a swim in the strictly private and extraordinarily clean spring-fed Vachery Pond. The purpose built bike course has riders twisting in-and-out and up-and-down the dense tree-lined forests. It’s incredible how much turning is involved, most on perfectly tacky dirt. The run is just as fun, crossing over creeks and hopping over logs. There is certainly a primal feeling for those being chased, as well as those being chased down by others through the dark, cool forest.
Spectators are in for quite a treat as well with both the bike and run courses filter through the “arena” several times making it quite easy to track the action.
The event was dubbed the “Woodstock of XTERRA” last year in large part to the massive amount of camping available in the wide-open fields, live music, access to elites and a great beer and catering tent, and one can expect that atmosphere to get even better this time around. To make things even sweeter, race weekend falls on the bank holiday (Monday off) and the annual Wings & Wheels celebration nearby treats the XTERRA crowd to amazing aerial displays from the Red Arrows and others.
Registration is open now at www.xterraengland.com
